What Salad Dressings Are Good for You? Best & Worst Picks

Short answer: the best salad dressings are the ones that add flavour without quietly adding a second meal. A good dressing is low in calories and sugar for the amount you actually pour, built on a decent oil or on yogurt, and not loaded with salt. The worst ones are not terrible in a measured tablespoon — they are terrible because nobody pours just one.

This guide ranks the dressings people actually use, all on the same serving: 2 tablespoons, the standard serving on a label. Brand figures come from Hidden Valley’s official labels as published in our Fat Free Ranch guide; homemade figures are built from their ingredients with the maths shown, and everything else is labelled a standard reference estimate.

What makes a dressing good?

  • Calories per 2 tablespoons: under about 50 is great; over 130 needs a measured pour.
  • Oil quality: olive oil and avocado oil bring mostly monounsaturated fat; many bottled dressings are built on cheaper soybean oil.
  • Sugar: under 2 g per 2 tablespoons is a good line — sweet dressings fail it fast.
  • Sodium: under about 300 mg per 2 tablespoons keeps the salad from turning into a salt bomb.

The maths behind the homemade figures

Our homemade Greek yogurt ranch comes from our Fat Free Ranch guide: a batch of non-fat Greek yogurt, skim milk, lemon juice and seasonings totals 134 calories across 8 servings of 2 tablespoons, so 134 ÷ 8 = 16.75, rounded to about 17 calories per serving, with about 2 g of protein (18 g ÷ 8 = 2.25).

Thinned hummus is just hummus loosened with water: 2 tablespoons of hummus (70 calories) plus 1 tablespoon of water and a squeeze of lemon (about 2 calories) gives 72 calories across 3 tablespoons, so a 2-tablespoon serving is 72 ÷ 3 × 2 = 48, rounded to about 50.

The light balsamic vinaigrette uses a leaner ratio than the classic: 2 tablespoons of olive oil (240 calories) plus 4 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar (about 20) and a teaspoon of Dijon mustard (about 5) gives 265 calories across 6 tablespoons, so 2 tablespoons is 265 ÷ 3 = 88, rounded to about 90. The classic 3-to-1 vinaigrette, by contrast, puts 1.5 tablespoons of oil in every 2-tablespoon serving, and 1.5 × 120 = 180 calories before the lemon juice. No new bottled brand was added to this table: the only brand figures here are Hidden Valley’s, already verified from the official labels for our Fat Free Ranch guide, while bottled Caesar and Thousand Island figures are typical label values labelled as estimates.

Best picks, ranked

Best overall: Greek yogurt ranch

At 17 calories per 2 tablespoons with about 2 g of protein, it is the only creamy dressing that behaves like a light one. It is cheap, takes two minutes to whisk, and works as a dip for vegetables as well as a dressing.

Best store-bought: Hidden Valley Fat Free Ranch

No whisking required and 30 calories per 2 tablespoons — less than a quarter of regular ranch. The trade-off, covered below, is sugar and salt.

Best creamy option: Greek yogurt ranch again

This is the honest answer: every bottled creamy dressing in the table costs 130 calories or more per 2 tablespoons, while the yogurt version costs 17. If you want creamy, make the yogurt one; if you want a bottle, buy the fat free ranch.

Best oil-based: light balsamic vinaigrette

At about 90 calories it is not the lowest number in the table, but it brings good oil, no added sugar beyond the vinegar itself, and real flavour — the best choice when you want a proper vinaigrette.

Dressings that look healthy but are not

Fat free is the big one. Hidden Valley’s fat free ranch has just 30 calories per 2 tablespoons, but it carries 3 g of sugar — triple the 1 g in regular ranch — and 320 mg of sodium against regular ranch’s 260 mg. Fat free is still the better buy on calories, but it is not a free pass.

“Light” is the same story in miniature. Hidden Valley’s Light ranch is 60 calories per 2 tablespoons — half of regular ranch, but double the fat free version. Light sounds virtuous; the label says it is still a middleweight.

And “vinaigrette” on a label does not mean low calorie. A classic 3-to-1 oil vinaigrette is about 180 calories per 2 tablespoons — the highest figure in this guide — because oil is 120 calories a tablespoon however good the oil is. If you love vinaigrette, use the lighter balsamic ratio above, or measure it.

How much dressing does a salad actually need?

Two tablespoons dresses a big salad generously once you toss it. Most people pour 4 to 6 tablespoons straight from the bottle without measuring, and the difference is the whole story:

  • Greek yogurt ranch: 2 tablespoons = 17 calories; 4 = 34; 6 = 51. Even a heavy pour costs almost nothing.
  • Regular ranch: 2 tablespoons = 130 calories; 4 = 260; 6 = 390. Pouring 6 instead of 2 adds 260 calories — more than many salads underneath it.
  • Classic olive oil vinaigrette: 2 tablespoons = 180 calories; 4 = 360; 6 = 540.

Practical fixes: measure 2 tablespoons once so you know what it looks like, toss the salad instead of pouring dressing on top, and ask for dressing on the side when eating out. It is the same lesson as our Cobb salad breakdown, where the dressing is what decides whether a Cobb lands light or heavy.

The bottom line

A salad is only as light as its dressing. Keep a jar of Greek yogurt ranch in the fridge for everyday salads, keep fat free ranch for the nights you want a bottle, and save the classic oil vinaigrette for the salads where you genuinely want the oil — measured, not poured.

What salad dressings are good for you?

The ones that are low in calories and sugar for the amount you pour: Greek yogurt ranch (17 calories per 2 tablespoons), salsa (10), thinned hummus (about 50) and a light balsamic vinaigrette (about 90). They add flavour without adding a second meal on top of your salad.

What is the healthiest salad dressing?

Greek yogurt ranch is the healthiest all-rounder in this guide: about 17 calories and 2 g of protein per 2 tablespoons, with the creaminess of ranch. If you prefer an oil-based dressing, a light balsamic vinaigrette at about 90 calories per 2 tablespoons is the best oil pick.

Is ranch dressing bad for you?

Not in a measured 2 tablespoons — regular Hidden Valley ranch is 130 calories, which is fine on a big salad. The problem is the pour: 4 tablespoons is 260 calories and 6 is 390. Fat free ranch is only 30 calories per 2 tablespoons, but it has triple the sugar (3 g vs 1 g) and more sodium (320 mg vs 260 mg).

How many calories are in salad dressing?

It ranges from 10 calories per 2 tablespoons for salsa to about 180 for a classic olive oil vinaigrette. Regular ranch is 130, most bottled creamy dressings are 130 to 140, fat free ranch is 30 and Greek yogurt ranch is 17 — so the dressing you choose matters more than the salad underneath.

What is the best low calorie salad dressing?

Salsa at 10 calories per 2 tablespoons, or Greek yogurt ranch at 17 if you want something creamy. The best bottled option is Hidden Valley Fat Free Ranch at 30 calories per 2 tablespoons.
